BIOGRAPHY
With his popular 2016 US Presidential run as a science candidate, bestselling book The Transhumanist Wager, and speeches at institutions like the World Bank, World Economic Forum, and the UK Parliament, Zoltan Istvan has spearheaded the effort to transform transhumanism into a thriving worldwide phenomenon. He is often cited as a global leader of the radical science movement.
Born in California, Zoltan yearns to use science, technology, and reason to dramatically remake humanity. He took a seven-year sail trip 2/3rds around the world on his own yacht in his 20’s, which was partially covered by the Travel Channel. He formally began his career at National Geographic as a journalist, and later became a director at wildlife nonprofit WildAid. Over the last few years, Zoltan has consulted for the US Navy and the Government of Dubai as a futurist, appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience (and many other shows), and gave many speeches, including at Microsoft, the Global Leaders Forum (Korea), Congreso Futuro at the Chilean Senate, the Financial Times Camp Alphaville, and BMW World (opening keynote). Zoltan was the only presidential candidate to be interviewed by underground mega-group Anonymous. He created the Longevity Peace Prize at an XPRIZE Visioneering event. His award-winning 2013 novel The Transhumanist Wager was a #1 bestseller in Philosophy and also a top 5 Amazon book. It’s being taught in various colleges and high schools around the world as a warning and inspiration about the future. In 2019, an award-winning feature documentary four years in the making called Immortality or Bust, which covers his historic bus tour across America on the Immortality Bus, came out on Amazon Prime. Zoltan is the founder of the Transhumanist Party, the author of the Transhumanist Bill of Rights (published in full in Wired magazine), and a frequently interviewed expert on AI and genetic editing. Zoltan has traveled to over 100 countries, and has a degree in Philosophy and Religion from Columbia University. He did a Masters in Ethics (Philosophy) at the University of Oxford. He was supervised by Professor Julian Savulescu, who was supervised by Professor Peter Singer. Zoltan frequently writes articles for The New York Times, Newsweek, Vice, Wired, TechCrunch, and other major media. Istvan is the creator of the concepts of Theistcideism, Omnipotism, the AI Imperative, the Singularity Disparity, Speciation Syndrome, Post-earthism, Delayed Fertility Advantage, the Three Laws of Transhumanism, Senescence Inference, and Jethro’s Window, a possible solution to the Fermi Paradox. Istvan is also a populizer of AI Day, the transhumanist olympics, the Jesus Singularity, cryothanasia, a robot AI President, and quantum archaeology (technological resurrection). In 2023, he published the Zoltan Istvan Furturist Collection, a seven-volume box set of his most popular opinion essays. A biography written by Dr. Ben Murnane titled Transhuman Citizen: Zoltan Istvan’s Hunt for Immortality by Changemaker Books came out in June 2024.
Beyond his transhuman work, Zoltan is a successful self-made entrepreneur, with The New Yorker and The Atlantic citing he made his wealth in real estate. He owns a porfolio of properties around the world. Today, Zoltan lives in San Francisco, where he is married to a medical doctor; they have two young daughters. Zoltan’s feature warzone documentary, Pawns of Paradise, about his coverage of the Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan, won documentary awards and played in film festivals around the world. As an athlete, Zoltan was a national champion water polo player and is credited with inventing the extreme sport of Volcano Boarding, which debuted on the National Geographic Channel in 2002; it’s now practiced around the world today. Zoltan plays the guitar and piano, and is a longtime snowboarder, surfer, and sailor. He owns vineyard properties in Mendoza, Argentina, Bordeaux, France, and Napa Valley, California–all under his company Zoltan Istvan Vineyards. His Gold medal winning 2023 Malbec/Cab wine was recently filmed by Netflix.
